ISSONET CHARLOT
HAITI | 2016 | 25’
Lamielle is a rural community in the northeast of Haiti. Devilma has just had her fifth child by his third wife. His job is in the farmland, his culture is traditional. Some difficulties forced him to migrate to the Dominican Republic, where in addition to the distance from his affections he will face slavery, starvation and disease. Chantravay is a word game that mixes chant (that means song, but in Haitian Creole language has a strong similarity with san =without) and travay, so work and sing. The author is inspired by this traditional practice to tell the simplicity and hardness of life in Lamielle.
The short film is realized within the project "Sparring Partners", an initiative aimed at enriching the technical and professional skills of young filmmakers in Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic, stimulating their creativity and supporting the dissemination of independent productions at local, regional and international levels. The project is implemented by GVC in collaboration with Fundación Jóvenes Sin Fronteras (RD), Fanal Productions (HT) and Asociación Hermanos Saiz (CU) with the co-funding of the European Union / Secretariat of the ACP countries.
