ANDREA SEGRE, IN COLLABORATION WITH STEFANO LIBERTI AND FERRUCCIO PASTORE
ITALY | 2015 | 30’
A documentary about migrants' travel across the desert, and testimonies of seasonal migrants arrested in Libya and abandoned at the borders of Niger. Arrested during police raids, they are detained in atrocious conditions waiting for being deported. Who are these possible emigrants? Where do they come from? And above all, why do they migrate?
Shot in May 2006 by Andrea Segre in the Sahara desert, in Niger, and implemented in collaboration with Stefano Liberti and Ferruccio Pastore, "South of Lampedusa” tells the experiences of these Africans fleeing their countries by choice or desperation or just by the desire for adventure.
"Is it difficult to travel by truck? For us it is not so difficult, because in some way we got used to it. But for someone who does it for the first time, it can be very hard. A truck is used to transport cargo, not human beings." These are the declarations of a Nigerians during a travel across the desert. Trucks crossing the desert of Ténéré; travel agencies organizing transfers from Agadez, in northern Niger; forced repatriations carried out by Libyan government under European pressure. This movie tells about the hidden face of emigration, despite what we usually see: last stage of migration, landing on Lampedusa island.
Screening and presentation of the movie with the participation of the director Andrea Segre.
