LOS MARCIANOS LLEGARON YA

Rita Brugnara, Piero Corva e Avi Basuki | Italy, Cuba | 2014 | 10' | out of competition

On 28 December 1954, then "Dia de los inocentes", is remembered by the Cubans as the day when one of the biggest collective jokes took place. In the area later called the Ciudad Deportiva, a great ship appeared at dawn. Twelve feet in diameter and four in height. In a short time 20,000 onlookers gathered. Disturbing noises came from the ship and there were people claiming to have seen the grotesque green creatures looking out of the glass dome. Members of the army were present, too: seventy riflemen surrounded the ship. Suddenly the door opened and famous artists came out, dressed as popular cartoon characters, with strange helmets and "armed" with machine guns toy singing the refrain of a popular song "Los marcianos llegaron ya/ y llegaron bailando cha cha chá/ ricachá, ricachá, ricachá/ así llaman en Marte al cha cha chá".

In January 2014 Rita Brugnara, Piero Corva and Avi Basuki  coordinated a training animation video workshop that involved 16 cuban youngsters from El Canal, popular neighborhood of La Habana. The initiative is part of the community development project "Canalizando Mi Barrio", designed and managed by GVC together with AHS (Asociación Hermanos Saiz) and co-funded by the European Commission.

The illustrator and animator, Piero Corva has worked in publishing and advertising in Italy and abroad, with a particular focus on social and educational projects. We mention the recent short animated film "A fish? No, a dog!" talking about a child refugee from Libya. With a bit of humor he creates characters and poetic scenarios.

Videomaker & Motion Grapher, Avi Basuki has worked in the field of production and post production movies, creating various online viral videos. He has worked with various professionals in Milan and in Jakarta, his hometown. He wrote short stories and scripts for short movies in his spare time. "Canalizzando il mi barrio" with the Cuban children is one of his favorite projects.

Journalist and editor of educational projects, Rita Brugnara followed the production of several short films for children focused on social issues. The short film "Gloria ha trovato un nuovo padrone" focused on the relationship between man and animal won the Giffoni Film Festival (42th edition category Elements + 3).
