LE SAVOIR EST UNE LUMIERE
Noémie De Pas, Tit Brecelj | Slovenia | 2013 | 59'
In 1917, in West Africa, an expert made the following observation: colonial schools are the best way to assimilate populations. Schools were then built and children forced to attend them. Children learned to count, read and write in French, without reference to their mother language nor to their culture. The documentary "Le savoir est une lumière" explores the impact of this colonial policy, nearly a century later, in Burkina Faso. The film delves into the surprising worlds of traditional African education and modern schools. By a series of colorful and poignant stories, the film confronts the legacy of these two educational systems, born a thousand miles from each other.
Noémie De Pas and Tit Brecelj met a few years ago in Slovenia while they were working with asylum seekers. Both fascinated by images, travels and philosophy, they started working on common photographic and video projects. Their work is focused on socio-cultural and environmental issues.
"Le savoir est une lumière", their first feature documentary, was shot over a year in Burkina Faso.
