SCENES FROM A DRY CITY
FRANCOIS VERSTER | 2019 | USA | 13'
Due to the ongoing drought in western South Africa, the water reserves in Cape Town are dwindling. Strict restrictions on water use have been imposed to delay Day Zero, when the city’s water supply will be turned off. The film shows drainage canals juxtaposed with crowds protesting water privatization, collective prayers for rain, illegal car washes, and golf courses. Different ways to confront the fear of an unprecedented crisis that reveals racial and social inequalities.
Francois Verster, Emmy Award winner, teaches documentary filmmaking at the University of Cape Town. Titles to his credit include A Lion's Trail and When the War is over (both 2002), The Mothers' House(2006), Sea Point Days (2009), and The Dream of Shahrazad (2014). He was director of photography and producer for Shameela Seedat’s Whispering Truth to Power (2018).
