MAURO BUCCI
ITALIA | 2016 | 90’
Hotel Splendid is an intimate and choral tail on the life of a migrant community coming from the African coast, housed in a facility for asylum seekers in Cesenatico. The film documents the daily experiences and the functioning of a hotel converted into a shelter for refugees. The documentary relates about the dramatic journey undertaken by migrants to reach Europe, marked by violence and abuse, and the path faced by the asylum seekers from the entry to the shelter until the end of the evaluation process.
Mario Bucci is a film-maker and an independent researcher of visual anthropology. He’s author of scientific essays on ethnographic cinema, published by a film magazine called “Black and White”, by the anthropological magazine “Visual Ethnography”, by the editors CLUEB and the American SUNY Press. Mauro Bucci graduated in DAMS (cinema address) with a thesis on documentary film-making at the University of Bologna. He also obtained a postgraduate degree at the School of Visual Ethnography of ISFCI in Rome. His first work as a filmmaker is "Hotel Splendid": a film about the life of a community of migrants coming from the African coasts waiting for political asylum in Italy. The documentary was self-produced and realized following a 12-month field research, living together with the movie subjects.
