UNCUT
EMANUELA ZUCCALÀ E SIMONA GHIZZONI
ITALY | 2016 | 19’
Any room, or the dark hut of a village. Just a blade bought at the market, one sharp knife or just a broken glass. Sometimes needle and thread, or the thorns of a wild dagger. The home women keep the baby shut, while an outsider is paid to inflict a pain on her which she will never forget. UNCUT is a short-documentary film that investigates in depth the theme of mutilation of female genitalia, telling how in four African countries - Somaliland, Kenya and Ethiopia - the women have coalesced to say enough to this cruel practice, sometimes paying the price of courage to raise their heads in their profoundly patriarchal societies. It's a chore story that gives back testimonies of pain, tedious battles for women's rights and in many cases success and emancipation.
Emanuela Zuccalà is a freelance journalist, writer and filmmaker specializing in women’s human rights. Simona Ghizzoni began her education by studying music and art, two passions that continue to influence her work. Today she explores, studies and narrates the profound female universe, made of great suffering but also of great strength.
