NON GUARDARCI
Souheil Bayoudh | Tunisia | 2014 | 30' | out of competition
“Non Guardarci” tells the story of the repression brought about by Tunisian anti-drug legislation. The law states that a person can be imprisoned for up to 10 years for a single count of mild drug-taking. This law was brought in during Ben Ali’s regime, and has been used ever since as an way of repressing people who disagree, affecting mostly (in a random way, and often without any proof) dissident young people. After the revolution, despite the repeated requests to withdraw it, the law is still in place, functioning as a repressive instrument against citizens who dare to disagree with the state. The documentary serves as a way of showing the effects of this law on its prisoners, as well as its function in the criminalisation of dissent, not only through interviews with experts but also by bringing together first person accounts from various young prisoners, condemned to years in prison because of this law.
Souheil Bayoudh has several documentaries in production on the theme of political corruption in Tunisia and on the problem of integration. He is currently producing a feature length documentary on the Arab Spring in Tunisia.
The documentary is available on the Distribuzioni dal Basso online catalogue www.distribuzionidalbasso.com
