HSU JI BEHIND THE SCREEN
Thomas Rio | France | 2012 | 25'
Hsu Ji, a six year-old girl, always forgets that when the police are in her neighbourhood, her father cannot come to collect her from school. Her father’s decision is therefore inevitable: “No more school for Hsu Ji!”. The child thus has to try to get through her days trapped in an old house. Always alone, Hsu Ji begins to watch an old silent film, when suddenly the protagonists leap out of the screen and enter her reality. They have so much in common with Hsu! To start with, none of them have an identity card. For this reason, when the police enter the house a little later that day, they are arrested. None of them, however, are prepared to be locked up. Hsu Ji and these silly characters thus plot their escape and make a plan to get to the girl’s father. Once they arrive, though, they realise that perhaps the world around them is not always on their side.
Thomas Rio was born in 1977, just like punk music, which he listens to between watching films. He directed his first film “Nous on s’en fout, on a des roues!” based on his experiences in a centre for disabled people where his parents worked when he was little. After having studied cinema at La Fémis (Paris), he worked with Berenice Bèjo on the film “Un homme peut en cacher un autre”. He has worked as a screenwriter with many French directors, including Mathieu Zeitindjioglu, for the film “Les fils du marchand d’olives”. His third film, “Hsu Ji derrière”, was filmed in 3D, and blends live action scenes with stop-motion animation.
