La sposa del nord
Elisa Mereghetti | 2012 | Italy | 24’ | hors concours
The portrait of a legendary city, controversial and multiform, historical bridge between Africa and Europe, in the middle of the economic boom. But what are the changes that the Tangiers would really want? In Tangeri, as in many cities of Morocco, there is an ongoing profound political transformation, as a result of the popular mobilization of the “February 20” movement. An Arab Spring perhaps less visible in respects to other countries of Maghreb and the Middle East, but not because of this less significant. The voices of women and men that live the magic and contradictions of the city also called “La Sposa del Nord” (Wife of the North) portray how in the imposing project for developing Tangeri there has been left little space for rights, for culture and for social development. And how women would be, once again, the most discriminated subject.
Elisa Mereghetti, director and documentary filmmaker, has directed more than forty documentaries, with special attention to anthropologic themes, female conditions and the development in the south of the world. She has worked for the Rai Corporation of New York, for the United Nations Program and for diverse non-governmental organisations. Since 1987 she has been working with American anthropologist Judith Gleason for the creation of the documentaries about the religions of afro-americans in Brazil, Nigeria, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Her documentary Eyes Wide Open about the AIDS epidemic in Malawi has received the support for the European Media Plus Program and takes part in the Africa 2012 campaign- Millenium Goals of the United Nations. She is a founding member of ETHNOS, independent television society based in Bologna. From 2004 she is the president of the association VAG61 – Office of Independent Media of Bologna.
