FRAMING THE OTHER
Ilja Kok, Willem Timmers | Ethiopia | 2011 | 25'
"Framing the other", set in Ethiopia, recounts the complexity of the link between tourism and local communities. The film reveals the thoughts, before their meeting, of a Mursi woman and of a German one on a touristic trip. The Mursi people, residing in Ethiopia in the Omo river basin area, in recent times is undergoing a process of intensive touristic development. Every day hundreds of Western travellers visit the Mursi to observe the habits of this population, in particular their practice of "body modification."
Transformed by tourists in curiosities to examine, the Mursi react to the encounter with “the other” in very special ways.
Funny and disquieting at the same time, "Framing the other" documents the destructive impact that an irresponsible tourism has on local communities.
