Free running Gaza

Mariam Shahin, George Azar | 2011 | Jordan/Palestine | 25’

In the Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza, Mohammed and Abdullah found a way to escape from their daily lives studded by war through Parkour, a discipline they learned watching videos on YouTube. This discipline represents the metaphor of their lives, aiming to overcome the political and religious mismatches, violence and political militancy. Through internet the two guys keep in touch with a world community of free runners, a way to escape the isolationism created by the Israeli occupation. Two teenagers from Gaza test their own physical abilities in order to overcome the borders imposed by the Gaza siege.

George Azar has covered the Middle East as a photographer and documentary filmmaker for the past 30 years. Among his main films: Gaza Fixer and Two schools in Nablus.  Free Running Gaza was awarded by the Jury Award at the Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival. He is the author of the books Palestine, A photographic journey and Palestine, a guide. His photographs appeared on the front pages of The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, The Economist, Newsweek, The Philadelphia Inquirer and other major newspapers and periodicals.
